What Is Autism?

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact, learn, and experience the world.

It is called a spectrum because autism presents differently in every individual—with a wide range of strengths, needs, and abilities.

At Empower Society 21, we define autism as:

  • A natural part of human diversity
A spectrum of unique ways of thinking, communicating, and experiencing life

  • A condition that exists alongside purpose, intelligence, creativity, and potential

We believe individuals with Autism are capable, valuable, wonderfully made and can thrive with the right support, understanding, opportunities and belief.

Autism: Key Facts

Prevalence & Diagnosis

  • Approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism

  • Autism is typically identified in early childhood, though some individuals are diagnosed later in life

  • Autism occurs across all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups

  • Boys are diagnosed more frequently than girls, though autism affects individuals of all genders

Development & Characteristics

Autism may impact:

  • Communication (verbal and nonverbal)

  • Social interaction and relationships

  • Behavior patterns, interests, and routines

  • Sensory processing (sensitivity to sound, light, textures, etc.)

However:

  • Each individual is unique, no two people with autism are the same

  • Many individuals have strengths in areas such as:

    • Memory

    • Attention to detail

    • Creativity

    • Problem-solving

Support & Intervention

  • Early and consistent support can significantly improve outcomes

  • Evidence-based approaches (such as behavioral and developmental therapies  by organizations like, our partners at Action Behavior Centers) can help individuals:

    • Build communication and social skills

    • Increase independence

    • Navigate daily life more effectively

  • Support needs can range from minimal to more intensive, depending on the individual

Lifelong Impact

  • Autism is a lifelong condition, but outcomes vary widely

  • Many individuals with autism:

    • Attend school and pursue higher education

    • Build careers and contribute to the workforce

    • Live independently or with support

    • Form meaningful relationships

Awareness, Acceptance & Inclusion

  • Autism is not caused by parenting or personal choices

  • Increasing awareness efforts have helped bring visibility to autism worldwide

  • There is a growing movement toward:

    • Acceptance over awareness

    • Inclusion in schools, workplaces, and communities

    • Equitable access to services and opportunities
